Even though the Mettler Toledo AT series analytical balances we discontinued back in the early 2000s they are still one of our all time favorite types of analytical balance. The Mettler AT-261 in particular has been a consistent seller for us for years and continues to be a frequently request item.
Now don’t get us wrong: Mettler still make quality products, such as the XS Series analytical balances as well as the ME series precision balances. All of these are good values and serve to remind us of why Mettler is at the forefront of laboratory weighing solutions.
The biggest advantage the AT models had over the AX and XS models, in our opinion, are the controllers. Mettler AX balances (also discontinued, incidentally, in 2005) had a removable display with a flat surface and embedded operating keys. The problem that we found with this display was that over time the gel that allowed the operating keys to function would wear out. For users who have the budget and desire to replace their balances frequently, but for others – say, academic labs – this could be problematic. Because the controllers were removable they were relatively easy for non-technicians to replace, but they were not inexpensive.
The buttons on the AT series, however, are just much more durable. They stand the test of time in labs and the buttons on the display rarely wore out, even when subjected to a lot of wear and tear.
