PBS recently aired an episode of NOVA recently the showed the history of horse domestication and the various ways in which this changed the course of human history. Besides being interesting, the show showed glimpses of lab work during the analysis of ancient horse and human DNA.

Several shots feature 4’ chemical fume hood workstations lined up next to one another in which biogeochemists worked to extract trace samples of milk fat from pottery shards, while a Thermo Heratherm incubator sits in the background.

In another shot an evolutionary biologist uses some basic rotators and a Thermo Sorvall microcentrifuge while explaining some of the difficulties in extracting DNA from ancient tooth and bone samples. A few moments later he loads samples into a Thermo Sorvall X1R centrifuge with a swinging bucket rotor. In another lab we spotted a Biorad Tetrad 2 thermal cycler.

If you have a chance, check out the episode online at PBS.org. And as always, if you’re looking for any lab equipment please give us a call. Thanks!
