Cryopreservation equipment is essential in almost any tissue culture lab in order to preserve structurally intact living cells and tissue. Because of the ubiquity of this equipment we always aim to have an assortment of used and refurbished liquid nitrogen dewars, autofill LN2 tanks, controlled rate freezers, and cryogenic ultralow freezers on hand for our customers.

The simplest type of cryopreservation is a manual fill LN2 dewar, also known as a cryotank. These models are not mechanical but rather consist of a simple double-wall vacuum insulated tank that is then partially filled with LN2 and periodically replenished. Racks are inserted into the tank, often hooked over the side of the rim of the tank. Samples can be loaded into the racks. LN2 levels in these tanks can vary depending on whether samples need to be stored in liquid or vapor phase. A good example of LN2 dewars are the VWR Cryo Pro models and the Thermolyne Locator series. Because these units rely on LN2 to provide cooling, the advantages of simple dewars include low power consumption and energy efficiency with zero greenhouse emissions, as well as reliably long hold times even in the event of power outages. The downside is that you’ll need to have a consistent supply of LN2 and monitor the tanks regularly to make sure they are adequately filled with liquid nitrogen.

Autofill tanks, on the other hand, can be connected to an LN2 source through a transfer hose and, as the name implies, automatically maintain an optimal LN2 level. These tanks are typically vacuum insulated with stainless steel interiors. Like dewars these units can keep samples preserved for a long time even in the event of a power outage, and should you lose power in your lab you can manually fill these models to help preserve samples for an extended period of time. Right now we have Thermo CryoPlus models available as well as some really nice MVE Cryogenics models.

Controlled rate freezers a different from both the dewar and autofill cryotanks in that they are not necessarily designed for long term storage of samples but rather for sample prep. These units deliver LN2 into a closed chamber and allow users to closely monitor the rate of temperature drop in order to preserve cell suspension and prevent cellular dehydration and ice-crystal formation. After the cell suspension is frozen it can be transferred to either a dewar or autofill system for long term storage. The Biogenic Systems 2101 is a good example of a controlled rate freezer.

Cryogenic ultralow freezers are, as the name implies, ultralow freezers with a low temperature range of -150⁰C or lower. These can be used for long term storage but cannot maintain low temperature for long periods of time so in the event of a power outage or other disruption a cryogenic freezer must be connected to some sort of backup system. Cryogenic ultralow freezers are typically designed as chest style freezers to optimize cooling efficiency.

We test all of the cryopreservation equipment that we sell using LN2 in order to measure static evaporation rate and holding time, as well as any level monitoring apparatus or autofill control system installed on the cryotank.
