We’ve been working with ultralow freezer technology for decades and have seen many positive trends in the evolution of ultralow freezers. One of the most important aspects of this evolution has been the changes in freezer door handles. Over the years handles have improved in both ergonomic operability and reliable locking for sample protection.

Back in the day, maybe twenty years ago, ultralow freezer door handles were designed as a circle with a small lever protrusion.

These handles were basic which was a benefit, but overall could be difficult to operate especially if the freezer door was frozen and/or vacuum sealed shut. They also weren’t easy to open or close one-handed so users needed to set down samples and use two hands when loading or unloading from ultralow storage.

The next generation of handles was undoubtedly an improvement, with the lever situated below the latching mechanism.

These handles are by far easier to operate one handed. The drawback is that over time the interior latch can become worn, resulting in difficulty closing the door to completely seal the freezer shut.

Next came the full-handle style that some manufacturers tout as the “best in class”. These feature cam-actuated, 90° rotation that applies mechanical advantage to quickly open frozen and vacuum sealed doors using only one hand. This handle was featured for years on Thermo Revco ULT freezers, VWR ultralow freezers, and is still part of the Thermo Scientific TSX series ultralow freezers.

Another newer, improved ultralow freezer door handle that we like is on the Thermo Revco Exf and UxF series:

The shape of this handle is ergonomic without being too bulky. It can easily be operated with one hand and when properly latched creates a tight gasket seal.

If we see any further improvements in the design of ultralow freezer handles we’ll be sure to keep you posted here.
