The Beckman Avanti J-20XP floor model centrifuge is a durable and easy-to-operate unit that can be used in a wide variety of applications. It can spin tubes as small as 1.8mL and volumes up to six 1L bottles, depending on rotor selection. We have several compatible rotors available, with the centrifuge currently set up with a JE-5.0 Elutriator rotor.

Elutriation is the process of separating particles based on size, shape and density. The Beckman JE-5.0 Elutriator rotor combines counterflow elutriation technology (i.e. the process of separation by washing) and centrifugal force to achieve the separation of whole living cells. The separation takes place in the funnel-shaped elutriation chamber. While the rotor is spinning a suspension of cells is pumped at a from outside the centrifuge into the rotor. Small cells with low sedimentation rates are quickly washed toward the axis of rotation and are washed out of the chamber, up through the rotor, and into a collection vessel. Larger and/or denser cells move through the chamber more slowly and reach equilibrium at the elutriation boundary, with the largest or densest cells remaining near the inlet to the chamber. Incremental, continued increases of the flow rate will elutriate all cells from the chamber.

The Beckman JE-5.0 has a maximum rpm of 5,000 and a max k-Factor of 6,785. It’s constructed of aluminum and stainless steel and features a quick-release assembly that can be autoclaved for sterile operations. The Beckman JE-5.0 rotor has a list for $25,000 or more for a new unit.
