Thermo Scientific has been producing biosafety cabinets for many years, but the 1300 series marks a welcome return to form. These units feature a sleek, clean line design that cuts out bells and whistles while including some practical updates.

Back in the day, we were big fans of the Thermo 1184/1186 and 1284/1286 bio safety cabinets. They were designed like older Baker biosafety cabinets, clunky and tank-like, but functionally solid and easy to use. Then Thermo started selling 1400 series BSC units, with a motorized sash. In our opinion, this was a solution to a problem that never existed – the sashes on BSCs are generally not particularly difficult to raise or lower. On top of the inessential nature of this auto sash it also had the added drawback of relying on an optical disk for operation that easily slipped out of alignment, causing the sash to freeze in place and become inoperable.

So when we first came across the Thermo 1300 series models our expectations were low. What a pleasant surprise when we discovered that these are well designed, energy efficient units with helpful digital display panels. The sash is standard manual operation that can easily be raised and lowered without undue effort and operates on a simple pulley and counterweight system. The sash is also angled for better comfort and visibility.

Another nice feature is the flat work surface. Some biosafety cabinets have an indented surface to prevent spills, which can be helpful, but can also limit the size of equipment installed inside the cabinets. The flat work surface in the 1300 series allows larger instrumentation to operate inside these biosafety cabinets.

The UV lights for these models (which are optional, not standard, so be sure to specify that you need a UV light when ordering) is mounted inside the canopy, at the top of the front section of the chamber. We like this design too, rather than having the UV bulb inside the chamber. While the risk of damaging the bulb in that scenario isn’t particularly large, it’s still nice to have the added protection and avoid the risk altogether. The UV disinfection procedure can be started by pressing the “UV” button on the front panel and closing the sash.

Stands for these units are optional – you can either mount the cabinet on an existing benchtop or table as long as the drain valve is clear. If you do order and stand, it can be disassembled for shipping, which saves a significant amount of money on shipping cost. Assembly is straightforward and requires only a hammer and Allen wrench set.

In short, you’re making a good choice with the Thermo 1300 series bio safety cabinet. Call or email us today for info on pricing and availability for 4’ and 6’ Thermo 1300 Type II Class A2 bio cabs. Thanks!
