When we first saw the Flow Sciences FS11300 we weren’t sure what to make of it. It looks like a balance enclosure, but it has dual HEPA filters similar to a biosafety cabinet. It can be customized with a sliding sash or glove ports and an antechamber. We asked ourselves: is it a modified compact biosafety cabinet? Is it a modified balance enclosure? Or something else?
This unit is part of Flow Sciences 11000 series benchtop enclosures, which are designed for potent powder weighing – in other words, it’s sort of a combination hybrid of a ductless fume hood and balance enclosure that protects users from airborne contaminants when weighing potent compounds. But instead of a separate enclosure and motor/filter housing connected by a hose (like some other models) the FS11300 has a top mounted motor and filters. The level of protection provided by the dual HEPA filtration is also above and beyond what many other balance enclosures provide. What’s more, the bag in/bag out filter system makes changing the filters a snap and requires no tools.
As with all balance enclosures stability of the work surface during operation so as not to upset the balance itself and negatively impact the weighing function. The top-mounted motor on the FS11000 series is a high-speed impeller, very energy efficient, and prevents and vibration from reaching the weighing surface.
