If you read our post on refurbished cryopreservation equipment, the Custom Biogenic Systems 2101 is a controlled rate freezer designed for sample prep and to closely monitor the rate of temperature drop in a set of samples in order to preserve cell suspension and prevent dehydration and ice-crystal formation during the freezing process.
While this might sound complicated, part of what we like about the 2101 is that at it’s core it’s simple: a very small, very limited amount of LN2 is allowed into the chamber, it evaporates, and a fan distributes the vapor throughout the chamber. Now obviously there’s more to it than that but this is the essential feature.
The built-in computer offers a wide range of programming options as well as memory storage for data on previous freeze runs and while the menu and interface look a little old school it is straightforward and easy to use. The multi-color graphing of sample, chamber, and program temperature creates a good record of performance.
These units can be set up on existing lab benches or installed on a rolling cart. Either option is fine, but because you need to connect these units to a liquid nitrogen tank we prefer the rolling cart – it just allows for a little bit more flexibility.
