We’re very excited about a rotary evaporator system that recently arrived here at AIE: the Buchi R-300 rotavapor. This is the latest and greatest design from Buchi, makers of the most popular, durable, and well-known rotary evaporators on the planet.
While we are still big fans of the Buchi R-210 and Buchi R-215 systems the R-300 features several improvements that are worth noting. First, the ergonomic handle. Unlike the vertical-style height adjust handle on the R-215 the handle on the R-300 is positioned horizontally, parallel to the ground. When the handle is pulled back the electronic lift is engaged and easily lifts the flask from the water bath. The lifting action is smoother and requires much less effort with this newer handle.
Second, the I-300 Pro interface. This is the central control for all functions and process of the R-300 system, including rotation speed, temperature and pressure settings. And not only can this interface be installed in several different positions including on the rotavap handle, on the vacuum pump, on a fume hood wall or lab bench wall, but it can also be set up to communicate with your smart phone for remote monitoring, including push notifications and live view.
Third, the V-300 vacuum pump. This is a chemically resistant PTFE diaphragm pump with an ultimate vacuum of 5 mbar and sleek, modern design. The transparent front panel allows you to easily see condensed solvents or particles on the pump membranes. With the V-300 a set vacuum is achieved very precisely by means of speed-control operation, and due to the absence of sudden pressure changes bumping during evaporation is minimized.
